What type of adhesive and backing should I use for my tufted piece?

The chart below gives recommendations for adhesives and backing cloths based on the use or presentation of your finished piece. Tuft the World has used and tested these products internally, though bear in mind that many of them are only available in the United States.

Every country has their own versions of adhesives. If a product listed below isn’t available in your country, try testing an adhesive containing similar ingredients. Below the chart, you’ll also find a list of adhesives that have been recommended by international tufters.

If you’re applying a backing to your piece, we recommend doing so using a contact adhesive, which creates a stronger bond than regular spray adhesive.

Please note that the term primary adhesive refers to the adhesive you’ll use first, to adhere the yarn to the tufting cloth.

Contact Adhesive

Only use Gorilla Spray Adhesive or Roberts 8200 if the piece will be backed with Final Backing Cloth.

If you are using Action Bac Backing Cloth, this must be attached using the primary adhesive, not contact adhesive.

We recommend Gorilla Spray Adhesive or

Roberts 8200 to use with Final Backing Cloth or Felt Backing Cloth.

If you are using Action Bac Backing Cloth, this must be attached using the primary adhesive, not contact adhesive.

If your project is a tufted piece that will be attached to a garment, we recommend attaching it by sewing, and/or using Gorilla Spray Adhesive or Roberts 8200

If your piece is a tufted garment or accessory, attach the lining by sewing.

Backing

Backing is not required.

If you do want to use backing, we recommend Action Bac Backing Cloth or Final Backing Cloth.

Yes, we have three options that are great for backing rugs; Final Backing Cloth, Felt Backing Cloth, and Action Bac Backing Cloth.

If your piece is a tufted garment or accessory, we recommend lining it just as you would any coarse fabric.
